In a recent interview with Ana Tili, conducted on January 3, 2025, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev looked back on the accomplishments and challenges Kazakhstan facedin 2024, providing a comprehensive overview of the nation’s progress and its strategic direction for the future. Tokayev’s reflections shed light on key areas of national development, including economic growth, social initiatives, the government’s response to natural disasters, and foreign policy.

Economic Development and Infrastructure Growth

One of the central themes of President Tokayev’s interview was Kazakhstan’s substantial strides in infrastructure development and economic modernization. He highlighted the completion of several large-scale projects across the country. These included the modernization of critical engineering and communal systems, the construction of 18 million square meters of housing, and the expansion of Kazakhstan’s transportation network with the addition of 7,000 kilometers of new roads.

Notably, the construction and renovation of airports, such as those in Almaty, Kyzylorda, and Shymkent, along with the advancement of industries like mining, petrochemicals, and metallurgy, have contributed to both the nation’s economic growth and its increased connectivity. These infrastructure improvements, Tokayev emphasized, not only support current economic activity but also position Kazakhstan for future prosperity in an increasingly globalized world.

Social Welfare and Citizens’ Quality of Life

Beyond infrastructure, Tokayev focused on the significant social advancements achieved in 2024. Among these was the introduction of the National Fund for Children, which provides direct financial support to families, as well as notable increases in pensions, allowances, and scholarships. The salaries of civil servants were also raised, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of its citizens.

Moreover, Tokayev pointed to the construction of hundreds of schools, kindergartens, and fitness centers, as well as the establishment of more than ten foreign university branches in Kazakhstan. These initiatives aim to improve access to education, promote physical fitness, and provide greater opportunities for intellectual and cultural growth. The president also emphasized the rise in state funding for science and the government’s strong support for cultural figures and mass sports development.

Dealing with Natural Disasters

2024 also saw Kazakhstan grappling with unprecedented natural disasters, particularly the devastating floods that affected several regions. Tokayev was quick to address the crisis, acknowledging the scale of the damage and the government’s swift response, which included timely evacuations and mobilization of resources. He recognized that while the floods caused significant harm, the consequences could have been less severe had the country paid more attention to infrastructure protections in previous years.

In the interview, Tokayev emphasized the need for continued vigilance and preparation in the face of such calamities. He commended the resilience of the affected regions and reassured the public that no family left behind in the wake of the disaster would be unsupported. The floods highlighted, he said, the importance of coordinated national efforts to overcome challenges and protect citizens’ well-being.

Kazakhstan’s Foreign Policy: A Strategic Approach

On the international stage, President Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s multi-vector foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of balancing relations with neighboring powers like Russia and China, as well as maintaining strong ties with global players such as the United States. He highlighted Kazakhstan’s strategic location and its role as a middle power in global geopolitics, advocating for peaceful and responsible engagement in international affairs.

Tokayev expressed confidence that Kazakhstan’s diversified foreign policy would continue to strengthen its position on the global stage. He stressed that the country’s strategic partnerships, coupled with its commitment to constructive diplomacy, would contribute to regional stability and broader international cooperation.

Looking Ahead: A Nation on the Rise

Reflecting on 2024, President Tokayev painted a picture of a nation actively working toward greater economic prosperity, improved social well-being, and a stronger international presence. While acknowledging the challenges of the past year, especially the devastating floods, Tokayev emphasized the lessons learned and the nation’s ability to adapt and improve its response systems for the future.

The interview reveals a Kazakhstan determined to balance immediate needs with long-term goals, creating a solid foundation for future development. By investing in infrastructure, enhancing social welfare, and maintaining a robust foreign policy, Kazakhstan is positioning itself for continued success on both the regional and global stage.

As President Tokayev looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of 2025, his leadership underscores Kazakhstan’s commitment to growth, stability, and the well-being of its people. The direction laid out in this interview offers valuable insights into the nation’s trajectory and the strategic vision of its leadership.
